Roll Call: Taking a Census of MOOC Student
This paper argues for spending resources on taking a high quality census or representative survey of students on who enroll with all major MOOC platforms. Expanded knowledge of current students would be useful for business and planning, instruction, and research. Potential concerns of cost, privacy, stereotype threat, and maladaptive use of the information are discussed.
متن کاملCensus Taking in the Hat: FRW/CFT Duality
In this paper a holographic description of eternal inflation is developed. We focus on the description of an open FRW universe that results from a tunneling event in which a false vacuum with positive vacuum energy decays to a supersymmetric vacuum with vanishing cosmological constant. The observations of a “Census Taker” in the final vacuum can be organized into a holographic dual conformal fi...
متن کاملEmerging nanoscale silicon devices taking advantage of nanostructure physics
This paper describes the present status of research on emerging nanoscale silicon devices that take full advantage of new physical phenomena which appear in silicon nanostructures. This new physics includes quantum effects that enhance the performance of MOS transistors and single-electron charging effects that add new function to conventional CMOS circuits. These physical phenomena may be used...
متن کاملLearning content, physics self-efficacy, and female students’ physics course-taking
A review of literature reveals that self-efficacy (SE) has been shown as a successful predictor of students’ course-taking. Many factors have been reported to have influences on physics self-efficacy (PSE), but most of them are contextual variables. This article suggests that learning content is also an influencing factor. Physics learning content in high schools is far from being congruent wit...
متن کاملExperiments with a spoken dialogue system for taking the US census
This paper reports the results of the development, deployment and testing of a large spoken-language dialogue application for use by the general public. We built an automated spoken questionnaire for the U.S. Bureau of the Census. In the project's rst phase, the basic recognizers and dialogue system were developed using 4,000 calls. In the second phase, the system was adapted to meet Census Bur...
